El Cercado de Lima is preparing to celebrate the Chinese New Year 2024 under the sign of the Wooden Dragon, with an event that promises to fill the streets of Barrio Chino with color and tradition this February 10. The main activity will be the Great Dragon Dance Parade, symbolizing prosperity and success.

During the day, more than a hundred artists will perform impressive dragon dances along Capón Street and adjacent areas, as a strategy to attract visitors to local galleries, restaurants and shops, thus boosting the community’s economy. With two tour times, from 10 am to 2 pm and from 2 pm to 6 pm, participants will move from the Ucayali jirón to the Paruro jirón, as part of one of the most emblematic festivities of the eastern calendar.

The year of the Wood Dragon, which begins this February 10 and will end on January 28, 2025, is considered a period of great importance in astrology and Chinese mythology, symbolizing leadership, nobility, and good fortune. This celebration is not only a cultural gathering, but also an initiative to support small local businesses.

The event organized by the Economic Development Management of the Metropolitan Municipality of Lima (MML) in conjunction with the Central Chinese Charity Society, is also intended to promote commercial dynamism in the area. The mayor of the MML, Rafael López Aliaga, has reaffirmed his commitment to strengthening the business fabric of the area, highlighting the potential of these events to enhance the commercial profile of Barrio Chino and its surroundings.

It is relevant to mention that the Chinatown checkerboard houses 112 galleries and 2,511 stores, which include a wide variety of restaurants and businesses with a variety of products.

“For the Peruvian-Chinese community it is the greatest holiday, it is a day of friendship, family, good omens, good wishes. It has mixed with Peruvian culture, it is a mixture that we all celebrate the Chinese New Year with great joy,” said Jorge Cáceres, from the Asia Dragon Society of Peru, in conversation with EFE.

This Friday, February 9, the Chinese-Peruvian community began the new year of the Dragon. The parade, along with dances, took place in the Chinatown of Lima, next to the historic center, it traveled through the streets with huge and colorful dragons, music and traditional dances. “We are at the beginning of the Chinese New Year, opening portals of positive energy to ask permission to enter the temples and perform rituals of good omens, a very old, ancient tradition that we always respect,” he explained to the media.
