A humanoid robot named Lightning, developed by Chinese smartphone manufacturer Honor, completed a 100-meter sprint in 9.32 seconds during a test event in Beijing, surpassing the men’s world record set by Usain Bolt in 2009.
World Record Broken on the Sprint Track
The humanoid robot achieved its record-breaking time during preparatory events ahead of the second World Humanoid Robot Games in Beijing. According to China’s state broadcaster, the machine reached a peak speed of 14.5 meters per second. That performance brought its 100-meter time to 9.32 seconds, finishing 0.26 seconds faster than the legendary 9.58-second record Usain Bolt established in Berlin during 2009.
The exhibition highlights the rapid development of humanoid robotics in China. Manufacturers and research institutions are increasingly focusing on improving robots’ speed, balance and ability to perform human-like movements.
Engineering Adjustments and Long-Distance Endurance
Lightning is not a one-trick sprinter. Earlier in the year, the machine completed a 21-kilometer marathon in Beijing. Its prior performance in the half marathon covered the distance in 50 minutes and 26 seconds, which was faster than the elite men’s human world-record pace. At that time, engineers measured the machine at a height of 169 centimeters with legs spanning 95 centimeters.
Ahead of the robotics games, builders made specific hardware modifications, including increased leg length, to optimize the frame for short-distance velocity according to the reporting from Beijing.
Competing Claims and Independent Verification
The sprint achievement arrives alongside parallel claims from the Chinese robotics sector. Another domestic firm, Unitree Robotics, recently showcased a humanoid prototype nicknamed Superman that boasts a top speed of 12.66 meters per second, equivalent to roughly 45.6 kilometers per hour.

Observers note important caveats regarding these impressive speed metrics. The Unitree machine’s figure represents a top speed claim from the manufacturer rather than an independent verification as noted in industry coverage. Furthermore, while the machine can achieve high velocities over short bursts, demonstration footage points to ongoing engineering hurdles regarding deceleration, with prototypes occasionally finishing runs with abrupt, uncontrolled stops.
