Munich It almost happened to the world’s largest contract manufacturer in the chip industry: When Taiwan experienced a severe drought two years ago, TSMC almost ran out of water. In dire need, the government decided to ration water in neighboring towns and farms – in favor of the world’s most important semiconductor manufacturer.

Despite the drastic measures, the group still had to bring in water on a large scale with tankers. This was the only way to ensure the production of chips for companies such as Apple, Nvidia and Qualcomm.

The drier it gets, the greater the risk that the scenario will be repeated in other regions of the world and that politicians will have to make critical decisions about water distribution. In more and more regions in which the chip industry is active, it is sometimes blazing hot and bone dry.
