After the 1-0 victory over Cruzeiro of Brazil at La Bombonera in the first leg of the Copa Sudamericana round of 16, Boca goalkeeper Sergio “Chiquito” Romero came out to support coach Diego Martínez, who has been questioned in recent days: “We know that at Boca everything is two or three times bigger than at another club. The coach is strong, he doesn’t leave any loose ends, he works. We have to respond on the field, many times the showy game that he wants doesn’t work out and we have to know how to get our hands dirty so that in the moments when the game doesn’t flow we can get ahead.”

“There’s always something extra in these games, but it’s 180 minutes. The first half was more difficult, they have very good players, but in the second we knew how to adjust and we managed the game better. We scored a very nice goal, it’s a shame about the post, but it was an important victory,” added Romero, referring to the game against Belo Horizonte.

Regarding Boca’s immediate future, the former Argentina goalkeeper spoke about Sunday’s match against San Lorenzo for the 11th round of the Professional Football League: “We always want to play, there is no doubt, but the coach will draw his conclusions about who he thinks is best to be there. It’s a classic and the match shouldn’t be given away. I think that most of us will be there.”

Finally, the Racing-trained player highlighted the level of Uruguayan Edinson Cavani: “I always stressed Edi’s professionalism, sacrifice and example for the kids. He’s one to copy and grow as a team. He not only scores goals but is there for the team itself, even to defend.”
