While the Fatherland Innovation Party won 12 proportional representation seats in the April 10 general election, it was found that it received a higher vote rate than the Democratic Alliance in Gwangju, Jeollanam-do, and Jeollabuk-do, which are the key strongholds of the Democratic Party of Korea.
According to the National Election Commission’s proportional representation vote tally on the 14th, in Gwangju, the Fatherland Innovation Party won 47.72%, ahead of the Democratic Alliance (36.26%) by more than 10 percentage points. The Fatherland Innovation Party received more votes than the Democratic Alliance in all five constituencies of Gwangju. In Jeollanam-do, the Fatherland Innovation Party won 43.97%, ahead of the Democratic Alliance (39.88%). In Jeonnam, out of a total of 22 cities and counties, the Fatherland Innovation Party won in all cities, including Mokpo, Yeosu, Suncheon, Naju, and Gwangyang. The Democratic Alliance was ahead in 10 places: Gokseong-gun, Goheung-gun, Boseong-gun, Jangheung-gun, Gangjin-gun, Wando-gun, Jindo-gun, Yeonggwang-gun, and Shinan-gun. In Jeonbuk, among all 15 cities and counties, the Fatherland Innovation Party was ahead of the Democratic Alliance in all regions except Muju, Jangsu, Sunchang, Gochang, and Buan.
The analysis is that this is because the Fatherland Innovation Party has expressed its judgment of the Yoon Seok-yeol regime more strongly and clearly than the Democratic Alliance, saying, “Three years is too long.” It is also interpreted that the opposition supporters in Honam, who are dissatisfied with Representative Lee Jae-myung’s Democratic Party, supported the Fatherland Innovation Party. For this reason, there is a view that a strange tension, beyond competition, may be formed between the Democratic Party and the Fatherland Innovation Party over the public sentiment of Honam in the future 22nd National Assembly.
In regions other than the home garden, the phenomenon of the Fatherland Innovation Party ahead of the Democratic Alliance was noticeable in places where the People’s Future won. In Seoul, the Fatherland Innovation Party was ahead of the Democratic Alliance in only two regions: Seocho and Gangnam, where the People’s Future took an overwhelming first place. In Seocho, the Fatherland Innovation Party led the Democratic Alliance (37,065 votes) with 48,249 votes. In Gangnam, the vote rate was higher with 59,469 votes than the Democratic Alliance, which received 46,072 votes. In Daegu, in Suseong-gu, which is considered the ‘Gangnam of Daegu’, the People’s Future took an overwhelming first place with 129,610 votes, while the Fatherland Innovation Party was ahead of the Democratic Alliance (27,537 votes) with 30,061 votes. In Gyeongbuk, Gangwon, and Chungcheongbuk-do, there was no place where the Fatherland Innovation Party ranked first.
Representative Cho Kuk said on the 14th, “As the representative of the third largest party in the National Assembly, I hope to meet President Yoon Seok-yeol at any time and in any format.” Following Democratic Party leader Lee Jae-myung, he put pressure on holding a meeting with President Yoon. In response to this, the President’s Office responded, “We are seeking personnel reform, such as replacing the Chief of Staff, so reorganizing the internal system is a priority.”
