Former US National Security Advisor O’Brien: “Continuously Strengthening the ROK-US Alliance”
The Ministry of Foreign Affairs announced on the 13th that Minister of Foreign Affairs Cho Tae-yeol met with former U.S. National Security Advisor Robert O’Brien, a close associate of former U.S. President Donald Trump, and exchanged opinions on the South Korea-U.S. alliance, South Korea-U.S.-Japan cooperation, and the U.S. presidential election.
Minister Cho told former National Security Advisor O’Brien on that day, “The ROK-US alliance has developed without wavering under the bipartisan support of the US and the opposition parties,” and “Now, that cooperation is being significantly expanded across all areas, including economic security and cutting-edge technology.”
Minister Cho also explained that Korea is a country that is far ahead of other countries in terms of defense spending, investment in the U.S., and job creation, saying, “Korea is no longer a one-sided beneficiary of the ROK-U.S. alliance, but a partner with the capacity and will to actively contribute to regional and global security and prosperity.”
Former National Security Advisor O’Brien said, “Korea, a model case of economic growth, is a major investment country for the United States,” and “among America’s allies, it is the country that most actively shares its security burden.”
He said, “The importance of the Indo-Pacific region cannot be overemphasized,” and added, “Cooperation with South Korea, a key U.S. ally, is essential not only for the two countries but also for peace and prosperity in the Indo-Pacific region. The South Korea-U.S. alliance and South Korea-U.S.-Japan cooperation will continue to strengthen in the future.”
Former National Security Advisor O’Brien also highly evaluated Korea’s capabilities and contributions in the defense industry, saying, “There is great potential for cooperation between the two countries in shipbuilding and vessel maintenance, repair, and overhaul (MRO),” and “I hope that cooperation in related fields will continue in the future.”
He also evaluated the significant role that Korea has played in responding to major international challenges, adding, “I look forward to future cooperation on the international stage, including cooperation with the Group of Seven (G7).”
Former National Security Advisor O’Brien is a close associate of former President Trump and is expected to be appointed as Secretary of State when Trump’s second term begins.
Also present at the meeting that day was Allison Hooker, former senior director for Asian affairs at the White House National Security Council who led North American negotiations in the Trump administration.
