The two ministers visited Australia to attend the Korea-Australia Foreign Affairs and Defense 2+2 Ministerial Meeting held on May 1 this year.

According to the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, the two ministers paid a courtesy call on Australian Prime Minister Anthony Norman Albanese in Canberra, the capital of Australia, on the 29th. The two ministers conveyed President Yoon Seok-yeol’s greetings and first expressed gratitude for the noble dedication of the 17,164 Australian veterans who participated in the Korean War. Australia is a representative ally, the second in the world after the United States to send troops to the Korean War. Of the more than 17,000 veterans at the time, 340 were killed, 1,216 were injured, and 30 were taken prisoner.

The two ministers also expressed their intention to do their best to advance the relationship between the two countries, which was upgraded to a ‘comprehensive strategic partnership’ in September 2021. On this day, Korea and Australia decided to strengthen cooperation to implement the two countries’ Indo-Pacific strategies, and also decided to deepen cooperation in the field of defense and defense industry cooperation. In addition, both sides agreed to continue high-level communication between the two countries, including summit-level exchanges.

Prime Minister Albanese said on this day that “challenges to the rules-based international order continue” and emphasized the importance of “cooperation between countries with similar positions in the region,” such as Korea and Australia. Regarding the 6th Foreign Affairs and Defense 2+2 Ministerial Meeting between Korea and Australia, which will be held in Australia on May 1 this year, Prime Minister Albanese said, “I expect it to be an important opportunity to strengthen strategic communication and cooperation between the two countries.” .
