Serves as a cutting-edge science and technology ‘knowledge platform’
“SKMS philosophy takes the lead in social diffusion”
SK Group’s SKMS heritage, which led challenging mergers and acquisitions (M&A) and advancement of leading technologies through excellent talent management, is expanding beyond the group to become a ‘knowledge platform’ for the entire society. The ‘Choi Jong-hyun Academy’, established to commemorate the 20th anniversary of late President Choi Jong-hyun’s death, announced that it is taking the lead in creating and disseminating new knowledge with global value for humanity through diverse interdisciplinary research.
The Choi Jonghyun Academy was established in 2018 by Chairman Choi Tae-won,who contributed SK Corporation stock worth 52 billion won. While the Korea Foundation for Advanced Studies, which was founded in 1974 by former Chairman Choi and celebrates it’s 50th anniversary this year, focused on ‘nurturing talent’ by supporting overseas study expenses for outstanding talents, the choi Jonghyun Academy is a gathering of renowned scholars from home and abroad to address geopolitical risks and We are carrying out a ’knowledge exchange’ project to research science and technology.
As the conflict between the U.S. and China continues and ‘economic security’ leads to ‘national security’, the Academy is analyzing geopolitical risks in cooperation with think tanks such as the Center for Strategic and International Studies (CSIS) and the Rand Institute. In particular, the ‘Trans Pacific Dialog’, which will be held every year in Washington, D.C. starting in 2021, brings together current and former high-ranking officials from Korea, the United states, and Japan, as well as academic and business figures, to focus on various risks in the Northeast Asia and Pacific regions and to discuss ways for policy cooperation. I’m looking for it.
The academy also serves as a knowledge platform to discuss cutting-edge science and technology. The ‘Advanced Science Advisory Committee’, launched in June 2022, is comprised of 37 domestic and 14 international scholars and is conducting research presentations in fields such as particle physics, nano-quantum science, and brain science. Participants include Hyun Taek-hwan, Distinguished Professor of Chemistry at Seoul National University, and Distinguished Professor Bitnae-ri Kim of Seoul National University’s Department of Life Sciences, who are mentioned every year as leading candidates for the Nobel Prize in Korea. The ‘Science Innovation Series’,which introduces the social changes that science and technology will bring to the public, has been held 26 times from 2019 to present with topics such as artificial intelligence (AI),batteries, and semiconductors. Stanley Whittingham, winner of the 2019 Nobel Prize in Chemistry, and Adem Patapoutian, winner of the 2021 Nobel
Prize in Physiology or medicine, also participated as speakers.
Kim Yu-seok, CEO of Choi Jong-hyun Academy, emphasized that he is working to spread the SKMS philosophy, which is the group’s heritage, throughout society. CEO Kim said, “The core of SKMS is a culture of voluntary and motivated use of brains,” and added, “We will help our society achieve sustainable growth through a virtuous cycle of talented individuals and knowledge.”
