Choi Kyung-ju (54) became the first Korean to win the trophy for the US PGA Champions Tour major tournament, ‘The Senior Open’, on the 29th of last month. Only two weeks had passed since then, but his footsteps were already headed towards the ‘next step’.

Choi Kyung-ju said in a video press conference on the 13th, “I couldn’t sleep the night I won because my play kept going through my head,” and “It’s true that I was excited because it’s not an experience I get to have often. However, my priority is to reestablish myself and calmly return to my place.”

By winning this tournament, Choi Kyung-ju also earned a spot in next year’s ‘The Open’. Choi Kyung-ju has won eight times on the PGA Tour, but has never won a trophy in one of the four major tournaments (Masters, PGA Championship, US Open, The Open). If Choi Kyung-ju participates in next year’s tournament, it will be his 16th appearance in The Open.

Choi Kyung-ju said, “The Open is all about how to deal with bunkers and the wind. These are conditions I cannot avoid.” Instead, she said, “I will prepare for the tournament by honing my sharp and clear iron shots so that I can control myself in any situation.”

Professional golfers often consider putting to be the most important, but Choi K.J. believes that good putts are possible only when iron shots are the foundation. Choi K.J. said, “I often advise my son that accurate iron shots are important when attacking the green to get the ball in a position where he can make a good putt.”

His second son, Choi Kang-jun (21), is a member of the Duke University golf team and won the Golfcotton States Amateur the day before his father won the Senior Open. Choi Kyung-ju has also set a goal of competing in a PGA Tour event with his son.

Choi Kyung-joo said, “I had surgery for a thyroid problem five years ago. Since then, I have completely stopped drinking alcohol and carbonated drinks. I also do 25 push-ups, 20 grip strength training sessions, and 120 squats every day. Since changing my lifestyle, I feel more energized when I wake up in the morning.” She smiled and said, “I think I can do it until I’m 60. I’ll try harder in the future.”

Choi Kyung-ju also gave words of encouragement to her juniors who did not win medals at the Paris Olympics. Choi Kyung-ju said, “The players must have felt a lot of pressure because they had to be in the top 3 to win a medal. I could see the earnestness in Kim Joo-hyung (22) as he tried his best until the end. Ahn Byeong-hun (33) also worked really hard. I am 100% sure that he will win a medal next time because he has great skills.”
