Choi Min-hee, the chairwoman of the Science, Technology, Information, Broadcasting and Communications Committee, is lost in thought after listening to ruling party lawmakers’ comments on the plan to hold a personnel hearing for Lee⁢ Jin-sook, the nominee for the⁢ chairwoman of the Korea Communications ‌Commission,⁢ at ⁣a plenary session of the Science, Technology, Information, Broadcasting and Communications⁢ Committee‌ held at the National Assembly in Yeouido, Seoul on the 16th. 2024.7.16/News 1

On the 9th, during‌ a hearing on the⁣ appointment of ‌public broadcasting‍ directors at the National Assembly Science,⁢ Technology, Information, Broadcasting and Communications Committee, when‌ ruling and opposition ⁣party ‌lawmakers confronted ⁣each other, Choi Min-hee, the⁤ chairwoman of the Science, Technology, Information, Broadcasting and Communications Committee, issued a stern warning. She pointed out that the ruling ‌and opposition party lawmakers had⁢ promised not⁤ to criticize each other the day‌ before, but ‌they were breaking the agreement less than 12 hours later.

While conducting a hearing on the illegal appointment of directors of broadcasting and other control measures at ⁤the National Assembly’s National Defense ⁤Committee ‌this morning, Rep. Choi Min-hee warned ruling and opposition party‌ lawmakers, “Do you⁣ all want to leave?”

Ruling party lawmakers argued that it was unreasonable to⁢ hold additional hearings while an injunction ⁢is in progress⁤ regarding the impeachment ⁤of Korea Communications Commission Chairperson Lee Jin-sook and the appointment of⁢ public broadcasting directors.

People ⁢Power Party lawmaker Choi Soo-jin said, “I am very ⁢sorry and disappointed that today’s hearing and all other events are⁣ being‍ held unilaterally without regard ⁤to the ruling party’s ⁣opinion,” and ⁣criticized, “The ⁤Democratic ‌Party’s current claim that the government is taking control of broadcasting is completely untrue. I don’t know how much the public sympathizes‍ with the fact that they⁣ are going ‌all-in on protecting MBC and the issue of public ⁢broadcasting‍ amidst media diversification ⁣through YouTube and OTT.”

Afterwards, while‌ continuing his questioning of Jo Seong-eun, the ⁢head‌ of the⁣ Korea Communications ⁢Commission, Rep. Choi pointed out that “the⁣ opposition ⁤party is⁤ trying to‌ deceive us into thinking that the KCC appointed ⁤public broadcasting directors in just two hours,” and this was followed by protests from opposition party members.

Opposition lawmakers, including Rep. Noh Jong-myeon of the Democratic Party of Korea, raised voices, saying, ‍“Didn’t ‍we say that we provoked ⁢them?” and “Why are you ⁣provoking them like this?”

In response, Chairperson ‍Choi Min-hee urged the ruling and opposition party members to exercise self-restraint, citing the National Assembly Act. She noted that Articles 49 and 143 of the National Assembly ⁣Act ‌prohibit acts that disturb the dignity of members.

Furthermore, Chairman Choi said, ⁤“Didn’t we agree last night that if either party criticizes the other or uses such words instead of conducting the hearing, we should stop them and stop their remarks?”⁣ and pointed out, “What if we ⁣break that in less⁤ than 12 hours?”

Afterwards, Rep. Noh‍ Jong-myeon protested to Rep. Choi, saying, “You’re not‍ canceling it or apologizing,” and⁣ “I just ‍don’t understand. We’re ⁣telling you to apologize and cancel ⁣it.”

At this, Chairman Choi warned⁤ again, “Stop. Do you all want ⁢to leave?”
