People Power Party floor leader Choo Kyung-ho said on the 20th that there will be no additional discussions within the party regarding the Marine Corps special prosecutor bill that would recommend a third-party special prosecutor, and that he understands that party leader Han Dong-hoon is listening to opinions from several lawmakers.

Floor leader Choo met with reporters at the National Assembly this morning and answered the question, “A third-party recommendation special prosecutor proposal is being discussed as an agenda item for the ruling and opposition party leaders’ meeting. Are you collecting opinions within the party?”

Floor Leader Choo said, “I understand that practical discussions are still underway on what to discuss at the ruling and opposition party leaders’ meeting.” He added, “Since the agenda has not been condensed or at a certain stage yet, I think there will be a discussion in the party leader’s office when we have the opportunity to talk about it.”

Floor leader Choo also responded, “We are proceeding in the direction I mentioned at the last Gwanhun Club discussion, and there are no additional discussions,” adding, “I understand that the leader is listening to the opinions of various lawmakers whenever he has the opportunity to talk to them.”

At the Gwanhun Club invitation debate held on the 13th, Rep. Choo said about the third-party special prosecutor law proposed by Rep. Han, “If the public’s suspicions are not resolved after the results of the Public Prosecutor’s Office investigation are released, a special prosecutor can be promoted,” and “I think a system that allows for fair investigations, such as a structure where political prosecutors do not conduct investigations and recommendations for the Chief Justice of the Supreme Court, is also possible.”

Regarding the formation of a consultative body between the ruling and opposition parties, which is experiencing difficulties due to differences of opinion between the ruling and opposition parties, he said, “We continue to meet and discuss our position that ‘it is necessary,’” and “I hope that the Democratic Party will take a forward-looking stance.”

The government plans to significantly expand the research and development (R&D) budget in next year’s budget. In response to the question, “Is this an admission of the government’s failure when there was controversy over the drastic cut in the R&D budget in the 2024 budget?”, he said, “Last year, when we were organizing this year’s budget, we underwent a major structural reform of R&D,” and emphasized, “This year, we will significantly expand R&D investment for the future of the country under the newly changed framework.”
