Chovgan World Championship (Azerbaijan-2023): the national polo team qualifies for the final
Rabat – The national polo team qualified on Monday for the final of the Chovgan World Championship, which runs until November 8 in the capital of Azerbaijan, Baku.
The national team, made up of Sidi Mohammed El Mhamdi, Moulay Abdessalam El Hanafi, Zouhir Lachgar and Taissir Kadiri, reached this stage of the competition after beating Kazakhstan with a score of 3 goals to 1 and Poland by 4 goals to 0.
The national polo team will face its Azerbaijani counterpart in the final on Wednesday, which qualified after beating Turkey on the first day by 7-1, as well as the Kazakh national team by 7 goals to 0.
The classification match to determine third and fourth places will pit Poland and Uzbekistan against each other.
The Chovgan World Championship sees the participation of six national teams from Azerbaijan, Kazakhstan, Uzbekistan, Poland and Turkey, in addition to the national team of Morocco.
Chovgan, very popular in Azerbaijan, is a traditional equestrian game played on flat ground where two teams of players mounted on horses compete. As is the case with polo, each team is made up of four riders who use wooden mallets to try to get a small ball into the opponent’s goal.
