Chris Brown Receives Suspended Sentence for London Nightclub Attack

Grammy-winning singer Chris Brown received an eight-month suspended sentence on Monday at London’s Southwark Crown Court. The ruling concludes a legal case stemming from a February 2023 nightclub brawl in Mayfair, where Brown struck a music producer with a tequila bottle. He will serve no immediate jail time.

Sentencing at Southwark Crown Court

Judge Tony Baumgartner sentenced the 37-year-old performer to eight months in prison, suspended for 12 months. Brown’s co-defendant, Omololu Akinlolu, 40—identified by the Crown Prosecution Service as Brown’s vocal coach and a Florida rapper also known as HoodyBaby—received a four-month sentence, also suspended for 12 months. Both men were ordered to pay £1,500 in costs following their earlier guilty pleas to a count of affray. U.K. law defines affray as conduct involving the use or threat of unlawful violence that would cause a person of reasonable firmness present at the scene to fear for their personal safety.

During the hearing, Judge Baumgartner addressed the severity of the incident, which occurred at the Tape nightclub on February 19, 2023.

The repeated use of a glass bottle in that way, especially aimed at the head, was plainly dangerous, it carried the risk of delivering a more serious injury than was ultimately sustained.

Prosecutor Heidi Stonecliffe KC presented CCTV footage to the court, describing how Brown used a heavy square-shaped tequila bottle to strike Abraham Diaw twice on the left side of his head. Senior prosecutor Claire Campbell of CPS London South described the event as a vicious and unprovoked attack in a crowded venue. The court heard that the incident lasted approximately 20 seconds and began around 3 a.m. After the initial strikes, the footage showed Brown continuing to throw punches while Akinlolu restrained Diaw in a bear hug. The CPS noted that the assault continued while the victim attempted to flee, and he was kicked while seated defenseless on the floor.

Diaw was later discharged from a hospital with injuries to his head and knees. While Brown initially denied the charges, he entered a guilty plea in July. In exchange for the plea, prosecutors dropped charges of assault, attempting to cause grievous bodily harm, and possession of an offensive weapon.

Legal History and Mitigation

Brown, who rose to stardom as a teenager in 2005, has seen significant professional success, winning his first Grammy for best R&B album in 2011 for “F.A.M.E.” and a second in the same category for “11:11 (Deluxe)” in 2025.

The singer had left the United Kingdom following the brawl but was arrested in May 2025 at a Manchester hotel while in the country for a concert.

Public Response Outside the Court

Brown’s arrival at the courthouse drew a mix of reactions. Inside the courtroom, the singer sat in the dock wearing a black leather jacket, looking toward the floor for much of the proceedings.
