German Finance Minister Christian Lindner, chairman of the pro-business Free Democratic Party, has defended the upcoming deployment of long-range American missiles in Germany. This defense comes in response to a report by DPA, citing his recent statement published by the Funke media group.
“Germany has been within the range of Russian missiles capable of carrying nuclear weapons for years. It is therefore crucial for us to establish a balanced deterrence capability,” Lindner was quoted as saying by BTA.
During a NATO summit in July, Berlin and Washington announced that US Tomahawk cruise missiles with a range spanning deep into Russia, alongside SM-6 air defense missiles and newly developed hypersonic weapons, would be stationed in Germany from 2026.
Regardless of the outcome of the upcoming US presidential election in November, Lindner emphasized the importance of maintaining US engagement at the center of German diplomatic attention.
“I am not resigned to the weakening of the transatlantic partnership,” he said.
“Even with difficult dialogue partners, we must do everything in our power to convince the US that a commitment to Europe is in their interest,” Lindner added.
