“The prevailing opinion of many canonists is that each obligation must be fulfilled with a separate Mass. Thus, when consecutive obligations occur from Saturday to Sunday or from Sunday to Monday, the faithful must attend Mass twice to fulfill two separate obligations,” the American bishops wrote.
“In addition to the canonical requirements, Catholics would of course be expected to foster a love of the Sacred Liturgy and wish to celebrate the holy days as fully as reasonably possible,” they stated.
According to the document, this same question about the possibility of attending a single Mass that day was previously raised to the Vatican, by some bishops, in a doubtswhich was “answered negatively by the Sacred Congregation for the Clergy and approved by Pope Paul VI in 1970.”
