Some people believe that chronic diseases affect only organic health, and this is not true, because they also affect the patient from a psychological point of view, and may infect him with a number of disorders.

In this regard, Dr. Manen Abdel-Maksoud, Head of the General Secretariat of Mental Health at the Ministry of Health and Population, stressed that people with chronic diseases need psychological care, in addition to obtaining drug treatment.

Menen explained that chronic diseases have negative effects on mental health, as they threaten those with some mental disorders, noting that diabetes – for example – increases the risk of depression, stress and anxiety.

She added that the relationship between chronic diseases and mental disorders is reciprocal, stressing that some mental disorders, specifically anxiety and stress, may cause high blood pressure, and the reason is due to the effect of stress hormones secreted by the brain in high doses on cardiovascular health.

She concluded her speech by recommending those with chronic diseases to stay away from psychological pressure as much as possible and to exercise regularly, because it helps improve mood, and perform meditation and relaxation exercises that soothe the nerves, such as yoga, with the need to visit a mental health specialist when noticing any changes in behavior with oneself or when Dealing with others.
