Turkey reached the quarter-finals of Euro 2024, with a hard-fought 2-1 win against Austria. The game was played at the Leipzig stadium.

Barely 57 seconds had been played when defender Merih Demiral grabbed the ball after a series of rebounds from the Austrian defense and scored the first goal of the game.
Demiral himself scored 2-0 for the Turks in the 59th minute, when he headed home from a corner kick taken by Arda Guler.
Demiral, a 2018 international and a player for Al Ahli of Saudi Arabia, scored four goals for the Turkish national team in 48 international matches. They hadn’t beaten the Faroe Islands in the Nations League for two years.
Austria, also on a set piece, pulled off the breakthrough in the 66th minute, when Michael Gregoritsch looked set to finish after receiving Stefan Posch’s through ball.
The Turks held on as best they could and even, in the last play of the game, goalkeeper Mert Gunok saved his team with a defensive save.
