The Minister of Citizen Protection, Michalis Chrysochoidis, spoke about the need to reorganize the police in order to respond to the needs of the times in the wake of incidents of domestic violence, as well as the phenomenon of violence against minors, on the “Today” show on SKAI
Mr. Chrysochoidis, questioned about Sunday’s murder in Ag. Anargyrous said characteristically that “a very heavy shadow falls over Greek society, I still haven’t gotten over the fact that a girl left”.
Responding to opposition complaints about his resignation, the Minister of Citizen Protection referred to the domestic violence law passed in 2006″, stressing that nothing else has been done since then and adding that “in 2019 we established the domestic violence department, a number of services and all protocols”.
Asked to comment on the police management of the incident in Ag. Anargyrous who ended up killing the woman said “there are failures but there were 12,500 incidents in 2023 and the police saved 13,000 women”.
“The problem is that every 45 minutes we have an incident of domestic violence that we intervene in. Because they run very fast, things take on a different dimension. With the encouragement they receive, the women are now talking,” pointed out Mr. Chrysochoidis, among others, and clarified that “and the police cannot run as fast as the developments are running and the problem is the safety of the victims. The policeman must say “sit here”. The main issue is safety when a woman enters the department, all these crimes are prosecuted ex officio no prosecutions are needed.”
With reference to the measures announced by the Ministry of Citizen Protection to deal with the problem, he said that “we are ensuring a safe house in each area so that the woman can be taken for as long as necessary, which will be created throughout the country and will start in week”.
Regarding the incidents of violence involving minors, the Minister of Citizen Protection explained that “there are social issues that have appeared in a more violent way, 500 arrests of minors have been made within two months. Yesterday in Glyfada, a meeting of minors to fight was prevented and the parents were also called. The criminal treatment of the minor is complicated. In a few days we will have a five-digit line that will work in the Juvenile sub-directorate and will be able to receive complaints”.
With reference to the issue of sworn police officers, Mr. Chrysochoidis stated that there are 97 cases while the guard at Ag. Anargyrous “served legally in the context of disciplinary law” and added that “I asked in what way we can modify this framework”.
Regarding the universities, Mr. Chrysochoidis said that “incidents of violence are gathering in universities and this is over. They have been limited because police forces are available.”
In closing, the Minister of Protection said that “the police need a radical reconstruction, regeneration and re-establishment to build a police that will meet the needs of the times. It must respond to social issues and not so much to the persecutory one.”
