The Minister of Citizen Protection, Michalis Chrysochoidis, spoke to ERTNews after the cold-blooded murder of the 28-year-old woman in front of the police station, from which she had just left and while talking to 100. “This incident is one of the most shocking, because a young 28-year-old girl has left in a painful way, in a violent way, and we are all grieving for that,” the Minister initially said.
“When a life is lost, nothing is good,” he stressed.
Regarding the fact that there is even a special training for police officers to deal with such incidents and whether this femicide could have been avoided, Mr. Michalis Chrysochoidis stated that, “it is important to investigate how the incident happened. When an incident like this goes to the police there are very specific protocols that a police officer follows to manage the incident, that the police officers are trained for. So it should be examined whether all this was implemented”.
He emphasized that: “We have over 17,000 police officers trained in this.” He explained again that, “what is important is to fully investigate the incident, under what conditions it was carried out, how the girl lost her life. We will conduct an in-depth investigation so that any responsibility can be attributed or any negligence, inaction, omission can be cured and punished and on the other hand, we can assure the citizens that a very big effort is being made.”
He added that after covid there is an increase in such incidents and that this is a social issue that we must discuss at another level, as a society. “But on the other hand, because the last recipient of this case is the police, the police must, they struggle, they make a great effort to manage the incidents in the best way,” he said.
The Minister explained about the inclusion of the term femicide in the Criminal Code that: “I agree with the term femicide, but regarding the criminal treatment, it needs a discussion. Criminologists together with the Ministry of Justice should “sit down” and see if this change is really required.”
He closed by saying that the prime minister also agrees with the term genocide, but the legal part wants a serious, substantive and cool discussion.
