The mayoress of Zaragoza, Natalia Chueca, has approved in the Government session a credit modification of 8.3 million euros to face the new tax on the deposit of waste in landfills created by the central executive and assume the extra cost of the city’s water supplywhich has become notably more expensive in the last year due to the updating of prices in the maintenance of the network.

The PP government spokesman, Víctor Serrano, explained that of the more than 8 million, an important part comes from the energy contract. Specific, 3.5 million of those budgeted to pay for electricity will be used for other purposes, such as the cleaning of public schools, which receives an additional 40,000 euros; the conservation of the public road and the improvement of accessibility (800,000); the renovation of the water network (330,000) or the maintenance and upkeep of the city’s public roads (200,000).

In order for these projects to expand their items, money must be taken from others. “The criterion followed is to deduct the amount from those that have a low degree of execution,” explained Serrano, who assured that in no case does it affect major projects promoted by the previous Zaragoza mayor, Jorge Azcón. However, 240,000 euros are diverted from the renovation plan for city avenues and 140,000 from the plan for squares.

5 million to pay a tax

The bulk of the first modification signed by Natalia Chueca is made to pay part of the 5 million that the city will have to pay per year for managing the city’s waste in the landfill. In the first semester, the amount for this concept rises to 3.5 million, according to Serrano, who took the opportunity to criticize the Government of Pedro Sánchez, now in office, for taxing the municipalities.

The mayoress, then councilor for Public Services and Mobility, requested a moratorium that was denied. She directly urged the now acting Minister of Agriculture, Livestock and the Environment, Joaquín Olona, to seek an alternative to deal with this tax in the least detrimental way for the municipal coffers, since it is the autonomous communities that enter the rate. “He has not done any type of management,” lamented Serrano.

The water supply spikes

On the other hand, 2.4 million of the total of 8 will go to the service of the water supply. According to municipal sources, it is estimated that the bill will rise to 10 million this year: 680,000 euros correspond to the water supply from the Imperial Canal, 3.6 million to the Yesa reservoir as a fixed rate and 5.7 as a variable rate, that is, for its consumption. In the budgets the item was 7.5 million.

The unknown is where the money is taken from. In addition to the energy contract, 1.5 million correspond to items in the Economy, Transformation and Transparency area associated with the urban galleries promoted by the previous councilor, Carmen Herrarte, and the digitization of markets.

Also attracting attention 380,000 euros that remain in the budget of the aid plan for urgent needs, endowed with 15 million and with a high demand, triggered since the health crisis. They also deduct 140,000 euros from the telecare program, 40,000 of addictions y 200,000 from the concerted aid program.
