Chung-Ang University Hospital Hosts Pioneering Medical AI ‘Prompthon’ to Fuel Healthcare Innovation
A new wave of artificial intelligence talent is emerging in South Korea, as Chung-Ang University Gwangmyeong Hospital recently concluded its inaugural ‘2025 Medical AI Prompthon,’ a competitive event designed to accelerate the development of AI-driven solutions for the healthcare industry.
The event, held November 17-19 at Kim Bu-seop Hall, represents a significant investment in the future of medical technology. It is a key component of the ‘Medical AI Health Care Personnel Job Training Project,’ a collaborative initiative between the Ministry of Health and Welfare and the Korea Human Resources Development Institute. The overarching goal is to cultivate a skilled workforce capable of harnessing the power of artificial intelligence to improve patient care and streamline healthcare operations.
The “Prompthon” – a portmanteau of “Prompt” and “Hackathon” – challenges participants to rapidly prototype and demonstrate innovative AI applications within a defined timeframe. Preliminary training programs, encompassing both foundational AI literacy and job-specific practical skills, were conducted from September to November to prepare participants for the competition.
During the three-day event, attendees benefited from expert-led lectures covering cutting-edge technologies and applications. These included sessions on ‘Healthcare on AWS,’ ‘Hands-free medical documentation’ utilizing Puzzle AI, and ‘Medical AI’s impact on operational efficiency’ with Omelette’s scheduling innovations. A final presentation and awards ceremony capped off the intensive program.
A panel of distinguished judges, including Lee Cheol-hee, Vice President for Medical Affairs and Director of the Medical Center at Chung-Ang University, and representatives from the Ministry of Health and Welfare, the Korea Human Resources Development Institute, and AWS Healthcare & Research, evaluated the projects. A total of 16 teams submitted proposals, showcasing a diverse range of potential applications, such as automating nursing records, developing clinical decision support systems, creating AI-powered personalized education dashboards, and building platforms for diagnosis-prescription analysis.
The grand prize was awarded to the ‘DNR’ team, comprised of Nurse Jun-heon Seong and Radiographer Yun-min Lee, for their project focused on ‘AI-based insurance cut prediction RAG.’ The winning project was lauded for its potential to proactively manage billing risks through an AI-driven support system, ultimately enhancing both staff and patient satisfaction.
“To ensure the valuable learning and outcomes from this medical AI education and Prompthon aren’t simply a one-time event, we are committed to disseminating best practices as hospital standards and providing sustained support for necessary resources and continued education,” stated Lee Cheol-hee, Vice President of Medical Sciences and Director of Chung-Ang University Medical Center.
This initiative signals a growing commitment to integrating AI into the fabric of South Korean healthcare, promising a future of more efficient, personalized, and effective medical services.
