The Diocese of Campeche, in the Gulf of Mexico, asked the deputy Héctor Malavé to “respect the religious freedom and freedom of expression of citizens”, after the parliamentarian attacked members of various religious groups who were seeking to present a project in the Congress.

“As a Catholic Church, we respect freedom of opinion, but we remind the deputy of Morena, Malavé, that he is not exempt from the position he holds of respecting religious freedom and freedom of expression of citizens, because being a believer or wearing a habit It should not be a reason for discrimination, we are also citizens with rights and obligations”, indicated on June 13 Fr. Gerardo Casillas, spokesman for the diocese, in a announcement.

The day before, dozens of Catholic believers and members of evangelical communities had come to the headquarters of the Campeche State Congress to present a bill that guarantees religious freedom and expands the guarantees of parents and guardians on moral and religious education. of their children.

“This before the imposition of ideologies contrary to family values. In addition, the right to conscientious objection and the protection of the rights of religious denominations, respect for religious symbols, care for churches and places of religious worship, among other points, are proposed,” said Fr. boxes.

However, that day Malavé went to the exterior of the legislative headquarters, where the demonstration was taking place, and then raised his voice, argued and verbally assaulted those present, blaming them for having been sent by the Bishop of Campeche, Monsignor José Francisco González, with the intention of disturbing the order.

“We are going to close the door to the Catholic Church in the Legislative Branch. They only come to create chaos. They are sent by the Bishop of Campeche. They only know how to do that,” shouted the deputy of the Morena Party, to which the president of Mexico, Andrés Manuel López Obrador, belongs.

He also accused the Catholic Church of being “always an adversary of all the progressive advances of the left.”

In response, the Diocese of Campeche noted that Malavé’s accusations are “totally out of place.”

“At this moment, Bishop José Francisco is not in Campeche, nor did he send anyone on his behalf to said demonstration and he claims to be in charge of said initiative,” the spokesperson explained.

Likewise, Father Casillas made it clear that the Catholic Church “joins the integral development of our State and our country” and that they will always be “willing to collaborate for the good of all the people who make up this blessed Mexican land, promoting meetings of peace and reconciliation, adding, not fragmenting”.

“We also know that the position taken by Deputy Malavé is not the feeling of all those who govern us,” he concluded.
