For the first time in its history, the Church of England has blessed same-sex couples. Catherine Bond and Jane Pearce were among the first to receive blessings for their “love and friendship” and commitments to one another at a church service in Felixstowe, eastern England, on Sunday, the British news agency PA reported. The responsible body – the so-called House of Bishops – had only approved the step a few days ago.

The fundamental decision to bless same-sex couples and pray for their relationships was made in February. This was preceded by lengthy debates. Critics say the decision does not go far enough; they are demanding that same-sex couples also be allowed access to church weddings. For others, the blessings are already too much.
