On the 13th, an official is demonstrating a ‘free’ mobile electric vehicle charging service at the Giheung rest area on the Gyeongbu Expressway in Yongin-si, Gyeonggi-do, toward Busan. Free mobile charging services will be provided at six highway rest areas where electric vehicle charging demand is expected to surge during the Chuseok holiday: Giheung (Busan direction), Geoncheon (Busan direction), Geoncheon (Seoul direction), Gunsan (Mokpo direction), Sintanjin (Seoul direction), and Chiak (Chuncheon direction). At these rest areas, 20kW of electricity, which can drive an electric vehicle about 100km, can be charged for free. 2024.09.13. [용인=뉴시스]

With electric vehicle charging available for free at six highway locations during the Chuseok holiday, the burden on drivers returning home in electric vehicles is expected to be significantly reduced.

According to the Ministry of Environment on the 14th, a free mobile electric vehicle charging service will be provided at rest areas where charging demand is expected to surge during the upcoming Chuseok holiday. The free service began on the 13th.

Rest areas that provide free electric vehicle charging services were selected based on factors such as charging facility operation rate and vehicle concentration, including Giheung (Busan direction), Geoncheon (Busan direction), Geoncheon (Seoul direction), Gunsan (Mokpo direction), Sintanjin (Seoul direction), and Chiak (Chuncheon direction).

A total of 17 units are scheduled to be installed, including 5 units in Gunsan (Mokpo direction), 4 units each in Giheung (Busan direction) and Sintanjin (Seoul direction), 2 units in Chiak (Chuncheon direction), and 1 unit each in Geoncheon (Seoul and Busan).

The rest area offers free electric vehicle charging from 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. However, free charging is limited to 20 kW, which is enough to drive an electric vehicle for about 100 km.

The dates for providing free charging service vary by rest area: Giheung (Busan direction), Sintanjin (Seoul), and Chiak (Chuncheon direction) until the 15th, Gunsan (Target direction) until the 16th, and Geoncheon (Seoul/Busan) until the 18th.

The free mobile charging service provision dates for each rest area can be checked on smartphone applications such as Kakao T and T-map, as well as the integrated zero-emission vehicle website.

For hydrogen vehicles, 40 charging facilities are in operation at 32 highway rest areas across the country.

The Ministry of Environment inspected the operation status of the zero-emission vehicle chargers installed at each rest area the day before and instructed operators to secure spare parts in advance in preparation for breakdowns, etc. In addition, for fire safety, it inspected the removal of flammable materials around zero-emission vehicle charging facilities installed at rest areas, the removal of cargo that could obstruct the entry of fire trucks and other firefighting equipment, the inspection of fire truck access roads, and the establishment of emergency communication networks with fire stations and fire centers.

From this day until the 18th, the number of staff at the telephone consultation window (health desk), which is usually operated with 5 people on holidays, will be increased to 7 people to respond to charger safety, breakdown management, and inconveniences.

Meanwhile, the Ministry of Environment is providing national financial support for the purchase of zero-emission vehicles such as electric and hydrogen vehicles to reduce carbon emissions in the transportation sector.

If you purchase an electric passenger car worth less than 85 million won this year, you can receive a subsidy, and if it is less than 55 million won, you can receive a subsidy of up to 7.5 million won. For vehicles priced between 55 million won and 85 million won, only 50% of the subsidy will be provided.

When people in the lower-middle class purchase an electric vehicle, they can receive an additional subsidy of up to 20% of the national subsidy, or 130,000 won, and young first-time buyers can receive an additional subsidy of up to 30% of the national subsidy.

When purchasing electric passenger vehicles for taxis, the additional subsidy will be expanded from the original 2 million won to 2.5 million won, and an additional 300,000 won will be provided to vehicles manufactured by manufacturers that guarantee after-sales service for 10 years/500,000 km or more so that even long-mileage commercial vehicles can enjoy sufficient after-sales service benefits.

Electric trucks are priced at up to 11 million won for small vehicles, up to 8 million won for light vehicles, and a flat rate of 4 million won for ultra-small vehicles depending on the charging speed. When purchasing electric trucks for delivery purposes, an additional 10% of the national subsidy can be received. For electric buses and other electric passenger vehicles, the battery safety subsidy amount has been increased from 3 million won to 10 million won.

In order to ensure the safety of electric vehicles, the government has decided to exclude automobile manufacturers that have not subscribed to product liability insurance from receiving electric vehicle subsidies starting next year.

The number of smart control chargers capable of controlling the charging amount will increase to 20,000 this year and 71,000 next year, and the slow chargers that have already been installed will be sequentially replaced with smart control chargers.
