The bike path proposal extends from the Obelisk to Plaza Independencia.

In an announcement made last Friday, the Montevideo Municipality revealed his ambitious plan to build a Bikeway that will cross the heart of the emblematic 18 de Julio Avenue. This news, however, has generated an intense debate and raised criticism from various sectors of society, which caused the capital’s mayor, Carolina Cosse, to come out to criticize.

One of the main concerns that has arisen amid this announcement is the safety of cyclists who will use this new road, which will be located between the constant flow of buses and cars that travel very close to it. In response to these concerns, Cosse assured that safety has been a fundamental priority in the planning of this new work.

“It seems to me that you have to read what was published and what was presented and you will see how it is: it is a segregated bike path, it is not separated with paint, but with segregators,” he told the press. He added that “There was dialogue with all the actors, groups, transport companies, Grupo Centro” because “it is something thought out and the safety of people has been the central axis.”

The cycling route will extend from the Obelisk, in the Parque Batlle area to Plaza Independencia, in Ciudadela, covering a total distance of 3.5 kilometers, along 18 de Julio, Yaguarón and San José streets. This initiative is promoted mainly because it has been confirmed that 18 de Julio Avenue is the road with the greatest influx of cyclists, registering up to 600 of them in a measurement carried out during the afternoon hours.
