Circadian rhythms adjust physiological processes at different times of the day and are in turn under the control of the activity of certain genes that generate oscillating mechanisms. These oscillating mechanisms determine the oscillating functioning of genes in a way that is particular to each cell. In other words, the same genes do not oscillate in a lymphocyte as in a muscle cell.

These gene oscillations affect cellular metabolism, which is not the same at all times of the day. The cells of our body are not the only ones that follow circadian rhythms, the bacteria in the intestinal flora are also subject to these rhythms.

In this case, the rhythms lead to fluctuations in the composition of the bacterial species of the flora, as well as their function. The fluctuations are influenced by the times in which they have food, that is, the schedule of our own diet, which is also theirs, as well as by the composition of said diet (proteins, sugars, fiber, etc.).

Researchers from the Weizmann Institute in Israel are now carrying out a study in which they explore in depth what changes take place in the intestinal flora throughout the day and what factors are the most important in them. These studies reveal that bacteria change their position cyclically throughout the day on the surface of the intestine, as if they were performing a dance on said surface, a dance that they repeat every day and night. These bacterial fluctuations not only affect the functioning of genes in intestinal cells throughout the day, but also the functioning of genes in other organs, such as the liver, that are not in direct contact with the intestinal flora. And finally, researchers reveal that the body’s circadian rhythms are highly dependent on the circadian rhythms of the intestinal flora.
