A scientist is forged over many years of work and dedication. In most cases, the illusion arises when a young person at school, high school or university is attracted or dreams of understanding and investigating the challenges that nature poses in one of its many facets. This interest is enhanced if young people are offered the opportunity to face the real challenges that we must face.

Today we are dedicating the program to an event, sponsored by NASA, whose objective is to show groups of young people, spread all over the world, some of the challenges we are facing at the moment. The event is called Nasa’s Space Apps Challenge, whose last edition was held on April 29 and 30, 2017.

During those two days, more than 25,000 young people from 69 countries, spread over 187 locations, joined their efforts to, using real data on Earth Sciences provided by NASA, face different challenges, divided into categories: Proposals for creative ways to use , interpret, and experiment with NASA Earth Science data. Innovative ways to study our ecological neighborhood from the design of applications that use the data in a way that allows a better understanding of aspects related to life on Earth. Applications that, using real data, offer improvements in the surveillance and detection of natural disasters. New approaches that allow the study of the hydrosphere and terrestrial frozen regions. And finally, developments that can combine data from NASA Earth Science with economic information in a way that allows a better understanding of human interactions.

In Spain, several cities joined the event, including the city of Albacete where it was organized by the Qubic association and the University of Castilla-La Mancha.

Thinking of the many young people who listen to our programs, we have spoken with two of the people who have made the event possible: Alejandro Macho, Industrial Engineer, president of the Qubic National Association for students and Federico García López, graduate in biotechnology and responsible for of the Space Apps of Albacete.
