Two projects through history for the atelier that tells history through fashion

from Anna Paola Merone

The journey through history takes us back to 1780. In Naples, the European capital of culture, a tailoring house was born – first recognized by the Bourbons, later by Savoy – which has survived until today while remaining firmly in the hands of the same family. Here begins the exhibition which will be hosted until 31 January 2023 in the Pompeii Model room of the National Archaeological Museum of Naples to tell not only the design that the Maison Cilento has dedicated to Mann, but above all the links between art and fashion. Ties that have two hundred and fifty years of life and take us back to the period in which, in Campania, the season of great archaeological discoveries and the revival of the extraordinary cultural heritage of the area was triumphant.

The ties and scarves

The collaboration between Mann and Cilento, as the director of the Museum, Paolo Giulierini points out, was born in 2020, the year of the pandemic: for those Christmas holidays, the maison of the Riviera di Chiaia launches a line of scarves and ties with the icons of the Archaeological . Among silks and folds, here appear, therefore, the Bull and the Farnese Hercules, Venus in a bikini, the pseudo-Sappho and the mosaic with the doves. Today the line is enriched with creations dedicated to the Epigraphic section and to the head of Palmyra, but above all the exhibition project takes shape. Which looks to a past in which elegance was punctuated daily by tie-presses and furnishings capable of guaranteeing meticulous attention to beauty details.

Collecting and merchandising

Enthusiastic Ugo Cilento, patron of the maison, who in the exhibition, set up in collaboration with the architects Marinella Parente and Silvia Neri, was also able to express his inspiration as a collector of objects of art and costume. While his case leads the way: for the new year, the National Archaeological Museum of Naples will launch an expression of interest to promote designer merchandising, even at an international level. As happened in the pilot contract with Maison Cilento, Mann’s administrative secretary Stefania Saviano will take care of the new selection procedure for creative excellence.

Fashion at the university

But not all. Cilento also arrives at Federico II, which promotes a new project alongside the artisan realities of Campania. Stories of excellence look to the future in the name of the economic, social and cultural revitalization of the territory. The project is part of the Third Mission of Federico II and will also see the funding of scholarships for students and researchers. Leading the way is the Federico II-Maison Cilento co-branding agreement, signed by Matteo Lorito, Rector of the Neapolitan University, and Ugo Cilento, representative of the eighth generation of the family of entrepreneurs. The agreement provides for the creation of ties and foulards of the highest quality. On the seven-fold ties, made of pure silk, the scepter and the globe cruciger are represented, symbols with which Emperor Frederick II is portrayed in classical iconography. The University logo is then sewn onto the tail. The ties are made in shades of blue and burgundy. The same symbols and colors are found on the silk of the scarves.
