C’is the most viewed film of 2022. Avatar: The Way of the Water has brought together more than 6.87 million spectators since its release in mid-December in French cinemas, dethroning Top Gun : Maverick as the most viewed film of the year 2022. “With 559,147 admissions for Thursday #AvatarLaVoiedeLeau reached 6,870,704 admissions last night. Best result of a film in 2022”, announced Frédéric Monnereau, in charge of distribution at Disney, on Twitter.

On a global level, France offers James Cameron’s film, which has already exceeded one billion dollars in revenue, its third largest estimated income, behind the United States and China. If no one dares to bet on his final score, the new Avatar should continue to achieve several million admissions at the start of 2023. The first part, 13 years ago, attracted a total of 14.7 million spectators in France.

A film that gives hope to cinemas

In France, it’s a lightning triumph, fueled by the school holidays, during which more than 500,000 spectators a day have embarked for the star Pandora since the release of this new Avatar, December 14. A frantic pace which allows him to dethrone on the eve of New Year’s Eve the fighter plane of Tom Cruise and the 6.76 million admissions achieved with his comeback from Top Gun since May.

Something to put a smile on the face of theater operators, after a year 2022 when part of the public was still lacking. The official figures for French cinema attendance will not be released until Monday, but attendance should still be down by around a quarter compared to before Covid.

Filmmaker of records, James Cameron is already the author, after Titanicthe highest-grossing film to date, the first installment ofAvatarapproaching $2.9 billion in revenue.
