Twenty trade associations, over 1500 people at the Adriano multiplex to ask the government for certainties on contributions and tax credits. Bellocchio: «Let’s stay united»
Not even the organizers expected such a massive turnout. That is, the over twenty associations of the independent cinema and audiovisual industry – authors, actors, directors, producers, distributors, agents, set designers, musicians, technicians, etc. —, a supply chain of 9,000 companies and 65,000 jobs that yesterday gathered around the slogan “We still want a tomorrow”. 1500 people arrived at the Adriano cinema, the five rooms were not enough to accommodate them. And in and several hundred connected in live streaming. Many well-known faces, the tip of the iceberg, Vittoria Puccini, Paolo Sorrentino, Fabrizio Gifuni, Valeria Golino, Paolo Virzì, Luca Zingaretti, Luisa Ranieri, Cristina Comencini. Many young people, the majority of the workforce of the remaining 90%, often precarious and underpaid, of the sector which generates 13 billion euros in turnover, 10% of the European total. The intent is to launch a cry of alarm with “one voice”: the industry, after the post-pandemic boom, is coming to a halt. «We are an industry that produces films, series, documentaries, animation: works that contribute to building and defining an identity and a cultural imaginary of the country, in which we can recognize ourselves not only as individuals but as a community, and which contribute to export the image of Italy to the world. Today this industry is stopping. The first quarter of 2024 saw an abrupt halt in film and audiovisual production, due to uncertainty and the continued delay in the implementation of public support measures for the sector. From a situation of full employment and strong growth in all segments of the supply chain, we are now faced with a real emergency with many productions postponed or cancelled.”
An appeal addressed to Minister Sangiuliano, Undersecretary Borgonzoni and Director General Borrelli on rules, timing and resources linked to the 2016 reform, starting with the tax credit. None of the implementing decrees, it should be noted, have been approved. «After a phase of enormous demand for products from platforms, after the pandemic, it is now slowing down. We are not here to cash in but to tell our story – explains Andrea Occhipinti (Lucky Red) -. Every euro invested in the sector generates 3.54. In 2022, the total production tax credit was approximately 768 million euros: 44% financed foreign productions, 33.1% the audiovisual sector, i.e. TV and platforms, and 22.9, i.e. 175.71 million euros, Italian cinema. We calmly ask for speed.” Furthermore, the block also concerns international productions which, in the climate of bureaucratic uncertainty, are preferring other countries. It is the first time that the industry appears so united. «It’s a great resource. We have made our proposals available to the ministry, the dialogue is open but must be strengthened” underlines director Francesca Comencini. And Marco Bellocchio raises. «It has never been possible to fight all together. I will be a Morotean and I will quote a phrase from Moro’s last letter: “let us remain united”, even beyond our inequalities.”
