Rome, May 31st (time.news) – “On an issue that involves the most intimate spheres of individual conscience, I express satisfaction with the approval by the justice commission of the text that introduces the universal crime for Italians who resort to the aberrant practice of renting the uterus abroad by exploiting compliant laws”. Thus Edmondo Cirielli, deputy of the Brothers of Italy.
“However, the text contains a juridical ambiguity that risks jeopardizing heterologous fertilization since gamete donations are not foreseen in Italy; couples who have difficulty in having, without the help of medicine, the joy of giving birth for a lifetime, for pathologies or even sometimes for reasons of age, they have to resort to donations from abroad through public or private centers which provide a financial reimbursement prohibited in Italy; at the same time, Italian public and private centers import gametes by paying a reimbursement for costs incurred to acquire the donation from the structure abroad”, added Cirielli.
“This rule, which confuses the cases of rented uterus and the marketing of gametes by combining them, opens up a problem of interpretation for prosecutors who could restrictively and differently apply the issue of reimbursements in Italy with the risk and fears of judicial persecution for thousands of couples and for a medical practice that gives birth to more than 2,000 babies a year in Italy”, continues Cirielli. “For this reason, an important battle, that of surrogacy, in which FdI was a leader must not be compromised by a law that lends itself to an ambiguous reading. Therefore, I hope for a reflection that leads to a correction of the text”.
