Citizen Launches New Retro-Style Panda-Dial Racing Chronograph

Citizen has expanded its Racing Chronograph collection with a new silver-tone panda-dial model, following the release of earlier black and cream variants. The watch features a 39.9mm case and the light-powered B620 Eco-Drive movement, aiming to offer a vintage-inspired aesthetic at an accessible price point for the sub-$1,000 market.

Design Features and Retro Styling

The latest addition to the Citizen Racing Chronograph lineup marks a shift toward a silver-tone panda configuration. This model retains the defining characteristics of the earlier releases, including the signature vertical stripe across the dial and a tricompax layout. The aesthetic leans heavily into classic motorsport themes, a design choice intended to evoke the feel of vintage racing watches.

For the CA4716-09L reference, the watch utilizes a 39.5mm stainless-steel case, paired with a deep blue dial and a matching tachymeter bezel. The reverse-panda layout uses silver sub-dials at the 3 and 9 o’clock positions to create contrast, while a smaller running-seconds counter is positioned at the bottom. The visual experience is completed by red accents on the central chronograph hand and pushers, matched with a brown perforated leather strap featuring cream-colored stitching.

Technical Specifications of the B620 Movement

Beneath the retro exterior, the watch is powered by Citizen’s B620 Eco-Drive movement. This technology converts light into energy, removing the need for regular battery replacements. When fully charged, the movement provides up to 270 days of power reserve.

The chronograph functionality allows for measurements down to 1/5 of a second. Practicality is further enhanced by 100-meter water resistance, a date window located between the 4 and 5 o’clock markers, and luminous hands and markers for improved legibility. The watch maintains an accuracy rating of ±15 seconds per month.

Pricing and Market Positioning

Citizen continues to target the accessible end of the chronograph market with these releases.

This pricing strategy places the new model among other accessible options in the brand’s catalog.

Case Sizing Trends

A notable aspect of the recent Racing Chronograph releases is the reduction in case size. While Citizen has historically been known for larger timepieces, the brand has moved toward more compact dimensions for this series. The latest models have dropped to 39.9mm, a departure from the larger dimensions often associated with the brand’s previous wrist monsters.
