TRENTO. The citizenship referendum, promoted by several organizations including Più Europa, has just reached the 500,000 signatures requested. The secretary of Più Europa, Riccardo Magi, announced it. The question proposes to halve the term after which foreign citizens can obtain Italian citizenship from 10 to 5 years of continuous legal residence.

We would return to what was foreseen “by the legislation before 1992 and we would align ourselves with what was established in several other EU states”, explains Magi.

“Italians demonstrate a great desire to participate and not to be resigned to the ideological way in which this government deals with central issues for the future of the country such as citizenship reform. Thanks to all those who believed in this possibility in very difficult conditions”, continues Magi who underlines: “Initially there were very few”. The secretary of Più Europa also thanks “all the subjects of the promoting committee, the personalities who signed and the activists. We ask Italians to continue to sign in the coming days giving even more strength to this popular initiative”.

Asked about the timing of the referendum, Magi explains: “First there must be the admissibility screening by the Constitutional Court in February, then we plan to vote in the spring”. “We have reached and exceeded 500,000 signatures for the Citizenship Referendum! Now let’s not stop, let’s continue to sign to increase support for the referendum and also for the popular initiative law for the minimum wage!” This is what the secretary of the Democratic Party, Elly Schlein, wrote on social media.
