Four other children were taken for medical care; Civil Defense warns of new storms
After the death of a seven-year-old child, due to a storm on the afternoon of this Tuesday (12) in Corumbá, Mayor Marcelo Iunes (PSDB) met with municipal secretaries to assess the damage and define a prevention strategy in the next days. He declared mourning and is providing support to the student’s family.
A storm of around 15 minutes was enough to leave a trail of destruction. At the same time, a funnel cloud formed in the sky and when it touched the ground it turned into a tornado. In addition to felling trees and deroofing houses and housing condominiums, part of the population had their energy service interrupted.
According to the city’s press office, the death of the student at Escola Municipal Cássio Leite de Barros occurred after a second gust of wind that hit the sports court located in the upper part of Corumbá.
Civil Defense reported that none of the five institutes used to monitor the weather in the city had predicted gusts of wind. The explanation is that there were two moments of strong wind gusts, the first moment with winds of 40 km/h and the second moment with winds of more than 70 km/h.
At the time of the storm, second and third grade children at the municipal school were in physical education class. During the first windstorm, the teachers tried to return to the classroom, but due to the rain, they chose to take shelter in the covered court. But in the second gust of wind, the structure was carried away and hit the second grade children.
The victim was rescued and taken to the UPA (Emergency Care Unit), but did not resist. Four other students were also rescued, one in the unit and three others in the emergency room. Of this, one student was released, another is undergoing an exam and another is still under observation. Everyone is stable.
Even the new emergency room was invaded by water.
The mayor decided to suspend classes throughout the Municipal Education Network until Friday (15). The period serves to analyze the situation of public structures. There will also be forensic work at the scene of the accident on the sports court.
The municipality also reported that Civil Defense predicts a new storm during the night. Homeless families are being advised to go to Cras (Social Assistance Reference Center) in Praça Céu to receive assistance.
Ten trucks, four loaders were made available and 40 people are working to clean the city. The service started in the lower part of the city and will continue to the upper part, where the storm was more devastating. All roads have already been cleared, but cleaning should be completed in the next few days.
