City was actually heavily in debt – the billion-dollar miracle of Mainz – domestic politics

by time news

It is the miracle of Mainz!

Last year the city was still one of the 20 most heavily indebted municipalities in Germany. Mainz was 1.17 billion euros in the Miesen, even had to switch off wells.

Mainz is now swimming in the money and wants to be debt-free by the end of next year: For 2021, the city expects a plus of 1.09 billion euros instead of the planned 36 million minus, for next year another 491 million plus.

Mainz, how it cashes in and laughs. But what is the reason for the sudden wealth?

It is of all things the corona pandemic and the associated rise of the vaccine manufacturer Biontech, company address: An der Goldgrube 12, 55131 Mainz.

Biontech still posted losses in 2019 and expects sales of 16 billion euros in 2021.

The result: The company flushes more than a billion euros in trade tax into the empty Mainz city coffers, Finance Director Günter Beck says: “This development is sensational.”

What to do with all that money

Beck to BILD am Sonntag: “We want to be careful with the windfall and put our city on a solid foundation for future generations.”

The parties in the city council agree on one thing: Mainz will pay off all of its cash advances (634 million euros) in 2022 – short-term debts that cost millions in interest every year.

Mayor Michael Ebling (SPD) speaks of a “historic opportunity”. The city wants to become a center for biotechnology companies, is planning an international school and wants to expand the university in order to attract new skilled workers. In this way, 5000 new jobs are to be created in the next ten years. Investment volume: one billion euros.

Attractive for new companies: The traffic light coalition in the city council has reduced the trade tax from 440 to 310 points – the lowest level in all of Rhineland-Palatinate. The city also wants to prevent Biontech from migrating.

There are endless other ideas. City spokeswoman Sarah Heil on BILD am Sonntag: “The list of suggestions is getting longer every day.”

► Gerhard Wenderoth (52), head of the Free Voters: “We should take care of the greening of facades, create living space for students and invest in the start-up scene.” The fountains should finally be allowed to bubble again.

► Claudius Moseler (55), head of the ÖDP city council group, wants to “make a lot of people happy with lots of little things”. Be it mending a pothole or a new trash can. Moseler also wants to lower the dog tax and invest in the city library.

Hannsgeorg Schönig (58), head of the CDU parliamentary group in the city council, assumes that the city will continue to grow. Mainz therefore has to put money into schools and build new daycare centers. Schönig would also like to set up a new traffic concept and expand cycle paths, some of which are currently ending abruptly. Mainz should also invest in its state theater and lower the property tax. That would benefit tenants.

Parties and citizens agree on one thing: Zebra crossings made of marble as in Sindelfingen (Baden-Württemberg, rich thanks to Daimler) should not exist in Mainz.
