On April 2, 2024, the Civil Registry of Ecuador announced the implementation of extended days for the identification service, with scheduling, on the occasion of the 2024 Referendum and Popular Consultation.

These sessions will take place from April 6 to 21 of this year, with the aim of facilitating access to the identity document for those citizens who do not yet have it. In accordance with the established schedule, an additional hour will be extended from Monday to Friday, in 21 agencies, from 8:00 a.m. to 6:00 p.m., for two consecutive weeks: from April 8 to 12 and from April 15 to 19, 2024. It should be noted that the other agencies will maintain their usual hours from 8:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m.

Likewise, weekends will be enabled from 8:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m. in 38 agencies, on Saturday, April 6, Saturday, April 13, and Saturday, April 20 and Sunday, April 21, 2024.

The fee for first-time issuance is $5.00, while for renewal it is $16.00. The payment methods enabled include online transactions through the Virtual Civil Registry Agency with the payment processors Kushki and PlacetoPay, as well as online payments through banking applications and in cash at various authorized points. For people with disabilities equal to or greater than 30%, the ID has no cost.

On the other hand, it is reported that older adults, pregnant women, people with catastrophic illnesses or disabilities do not need to schedule and can go directly to the nearest agency to be treated preferentially. In these cases, payments are made at the collection points located inside the offices.

It is essential to highlight that, in accordance with article 12 of the Code of Democracy, both the ID card and the passport are valid documents to exercise the vote, regardless of their expiration date.
