Civilization 7 Roadmap Adds Atomic Age and Space Expansions

Firaxis Games announced during PAX West that Civilization 7 will expand its historical timeline into the Atomic Age via a free 2027 update titled Arc of Tomorrow, alongside a space-themed paid expansion named Earthrise and a quality-of-life patch arriving this September.

Strategy games live and die by the rhythm of their epochs, and for months, players of the latest installment in Sid Meier’s franchise have noticed a distinct ceiling on their historical ambitions. While the vast Test of Time rework deployed by developer Firaxis in May reshaped much of the experience, the historical sandbox historically ground to a halt right before the mid-20th century. That limitation is about to vanish.

Celebrating the franchise’s milestone anniversary at PAX West, the studio pulled back the curtain on a sweeping content roadmap that bridges recent history and interplanetary exploration.

Patch 1.5.0 Brings the True Start Earth Map This September

Before the major epoch expansions land, players will receive a near-term upgrade designed to address community requests. Update 1.5.0 launches this month, bringing the long-requested True Start Location: Earth map to the game.

The feature places every civilization as close to its real-world geographical coordinates as possible. While it may tilt historical balance, it offers an authentic layout where Natural Wonders also spawn in their correct geographic regions. To keep familiar territory engaging, Firaxis designed the patch to randomize which wonders appear in each session. Furthermore, the update implements the team’s new Voronoi map generation algorithm on the Terra Incognita and Shuffle layouts to foster more natural terrain structures.

Quality-of-life adjustments accompany the geographic changes. Diplomacy rules now allow leaders to spend Influence to stay in an alliance without being dragged into an ally’s unwanted conflicts. Technical performance also gets a boost, featuring faster map loading times, varied resource placement, improved plot tooltips, settlement banners, and a new tile ruler for city planning.

Arc of Tomorrow Extends the Timeline Into the Atomic Age

The centerpiece of the upcoming roadmap is a major content drop scheduled for 2027. Dubbed Arc of Tomorrow, the free update introduces the game’s fourth playable era and extends the timeline by a century, carrying matches from the 1950s up to the 2050s.

The new era captures the tension of the Cold War and the dawn of space exploration. Creative Director Ed Beach noted the era’s unique weight.

Along with new buildings, units, visuals, and music, the update reworks nuclear warfare mechanics. Players can engage in offensive and defensive atomic strategies featuring a fun twist on mutually assured destruction. Multilateral agreements let leaders coordinate responses to escalating arsenals, choosing between collective disarmament or mutual escalation. The update also marks the franchise-staple return of Mahatma Gandhi, whose presence is tied closely to nuclear mechanics.

Empire management receives two new tools. Settlements can now be released as independent city-states to ease empire size and loyalty burdens, while Film Crews let players scout appropriate locations to produce Great Works of Film. Additionally, a Manufactured Goods system permits the combination of raw commodities to forge advanced resources, such as producing Enriched Uranium from component resources.

Earthrise Takes Civilization Into the Solar System

Following the free update later in 2027, Firaxis will release Civilization VII: Earthrise, the game’s first paid expansion. Rather than restricting space mechanics to an endgame afterthought, Earthrise weaves stellar exploration through every epoch of a campaign.

Civ 7 First Major Space Expansion Announced! – Atomic Age & More BUT…

During the Antiquity and Exploration Ages, players chart and name celestial bodies. The Modern Age unlocks early orbital missions around Earth and the Moon, while the Atomic Age introduces a dedicated national space agency capable of launching missions across the solar system. Discoveries made on planetary features feed resources directly back to bolster a civilization’s power on Earth.

The expansion also introduces environmental management mechanics. Players can utilize new technologies to alter terrain tiles and combat rising natural disasters driven by global temperature increases, earning distinct gameplay bonuses by mastering specific regional biomes.

Milestone Celebrations and Next Steps

The announcements coincide with the strategy franchise’s 35th anniversary. Reflecting on the milestone, Beach emphasized that the revealed roadmap represents only a fraction of the studio’s long-term vision.

Players eager to test the upcoming systems will have an opportunity soon. Firaxis is preparing to recruit playtest participants for the Arc of Tomorrow content through the Firaxis Feature Workshop program before the end of the year, while patch 1.5.0 arrives later this September.
