Claps: The cassette music festival in the Neve Shanan neighborhood is back

by time news

In an age when there was no Internet, YouTube and Spotify, Neve Shanan Street in the old central station in Tel Aviv, was the place from which the new gospel in music came. Electrifying sounds packed in plastic boxes, which reached every home in Israel. Singers and bands that were not heard anywhere else, received a place of honor and a lot of love at the central station in Tel Aviv, and the people of Israel flocked to the Neve Shaanan neighborhood to purchase the cassettes, which became assets of the Iron Sheep in Israeli culture and the Hebrew singer. Those who bought 3 cassettes also received a free belt. What is the connection between a cassette and a belt? There is no connection. But that’s how it was in those days. Cassettes and leather belts. Whoever won – remembers. Or maybe whoever remembers – won.

Ron Huldai, Mayor of Tel Aviv-Yafo: “Tel Aviv-Jaffa invests a huge amount of its budget and efforts to promote Israeli creation. The cassette music that grew in the Neve Shanan neighborhood in our city changed the face of Israeli music, constituted an important struggle for the promotion of equality and laid the foundations for the popular eastern music today. They say that music is the best time machine that exists , and as such, it has the ability to take us to times and regions we’ve been in, or ones we’d like to experience or visit again. I’m happy and proud to invite the general public to visit the neighborhood as part of the Shanan Sounds Festival, enjoy the feeling of nostalgia and be exposed to its cultural richness.”
