Clarence Seedorf, the 50-year-old Dutch football legend, has been appointed as the new head coach of Brazilian club Corinthians, taking charge of a team battling relegation in the Série A. The move marks his return to Brazil, where he previously played for Botafogo, and comes against the backdrop of unpaid wages at the club, with players reportedly struggling with delayed salary payments.
Corinthians currently sits 16th in the league, just one point above 17th-place Internacional, after losing eight consecutive matches. Seedorf signed a contract until the end of 2027 to replace Fernando Diniz, whose tenure ended following a string of poor results. The team has played 30 games with eight matches remaining in the season.
Club's Financial Struggles Spark Player Backlash
Corinthians’ financial instability has provoked direct criticism from defender Gabriel Paulista. I’ve given up a lot to achieve a dream, but now I’m living a nightmare,
Paulista stated regarding the management. Younger players struggle to afford basic needs and rely on teammates for financial support, with Paulista adding that his own family might have starved in such a situation.
The club has been waiting since 2017 for another landstitel while dealing with a megaschuld. This summer, a split nearly occurred with Memphis Depay because Corinthians could not meet financial demands for the Oranje-topscorer aller tijden, who joined the São Paulo team in 2024. Club president Osmar Stabile stated, Corinthians will pay Memphis’s salary.
Stabile added, We have two years for that,
while noting the club is trying to find partners. Depay signed on until mid-2028 after doing some heavy water-carrying according to club president Osmar Stabile.

Paulista condemned the board for failing to protect players, saying, We need protection. We must be paid, our workers must stay employed. What a shame to say one player must help another. That’s a shame for a club like Corinthians. The club’s financial crisis includes betalingsachterstanden van salarissen.
Seedorf’s Defiant Response
I’ve never left football; I’ve always stayed close to the sport,
Seedorf said at his press conference, citing roles as an administrator, an advisor, and a Champions League analyst. He defended his appointment by pointing to decades in the sport with AC Milan, Deportivo La Coruña, and Cameroon’s national team. His coaching record stands at 63 matches, 20 wins, and 26 losses, producing a 39.15% success rate.
Seedorf rejected accusations of overconfidence. You must ask if it’s fair to judge someone before they’ve done their work. The world is full of prejudices. He added, This is a huge responsibility, but I’ll give everything to build a team that fights for every ball, minute, and win.
He also stated, I know what I’m capable of; otherwise I wouldn’t be here to help improve the situation.
Seedorf enters this role after a seven-year hiatus from club coaching. His previous head coaching positions were held at AC Milan, Shenzhen FC, Deportivo La Coruña, and Cameroon.

Skepticism from Former Players
Former Dutch midfielder Johan Derksen called Seedorf a know-it-all and a bit of a drama queen while questioning his hiring. He’s been everywhere as a coach and never lasted more than a few months, Derksen said. Maybe you should come to the conclusion yourself after all sorts of departures at clubs that management isn’t your thing.
Derksen also raised concerns about Seedorf’s position in the KNVB, noting, He was in the supervisory board of the KNVB and now suddenly he’s become coach of Corinthians. The KNVB is reviewing whether Seedorf can hold both positions simultaneously.

Challenges Ahead
Seedorf will make his debut against Vitória, the number twelve of the Brazilian competition. That match takes place in the night of Monday 19 to Tuesday 20 October at 1.00 AM Dutch time. Memphis Depay faces scrutiny after dealing with physical issues this season, as Seedorf acknowledged by stating, Memphis is clearly a very important player, but he had various physical problems, so he is not in his best form. Depay’s last goal for Corinthians dates from March 15.
Long-term stability remains uncertain beneath the debt-ridden structure and the squad in disarray. As Paulista put it, We need protection. We must be paid, our workers must stay employed. Corinthians’ financial crisis includes unpaid wages and betalingsachterstanden.
Seedorf’s staff includes Zakaria Labyad, and potentially Jimmy Floyd Hasselbaink, who confirmed he was called by Seedorf and is thinking about the offer to join his staff. Hasselbaink is considering the offer. Management has emphasized Seedorf’s prior experience with Botafogo in Brazilian football.
Corinthians extended its losing streak to eight games in the Série A after losing 4-1 to Palmeiras on Sunday. The defeat occurred just days after Corinthians had announced the arrival of Seedorf.
