Clarification from the Food and Drug Administration regarding the toxic substance found in cinnamon and its impact on human health

by time news

Al-Marsad newspaper: The Food and Drug Authority in Saudi Arabia stated, through its official account on the “Twitter” website, that there are two types of cinnamon, namely Ceylon Cinnamon and Cassia Cinnamon.

The authority pointed out that it is allowed to use both types. The second type, Cassia Cinnamon, is the most widely used in food products. With regard to toxicity, it is caused by the presence of coumarin, whose consumption in large quantities and for a long time leads to negative effects on human health.

The second type of cinnamon contains more coumarin than the first type, Ceylon Cinnamon.

Scientific reports indicate that the consumption of cinnamon of the second type as a spice in food, and in the usual ways, may not lead to health problems.

However, the authority recommends moderation in the consumption of drinks and foods that contain cinnamon of the second type, in order to avoid any health symptoms that may occur as a result of consuming a higher amount than the recommended amount of coumarin.
