“Gone with the Wind” is a masterpiece of spectacular professionalism in US cinema. After inflation, the film grossed more than «Avatar» and «Titanic»
What’s more classic than “Gone with the Wind”? It is the most loved film in the world, firmly in first place, taking into account inflation, with 4,192 million dollars, more than «Avatar» and «Titanic»: costing 3,957,000 dollars in 1939, in five months it had collected 20, at the end of 1940 the 220′ film had been seen in the USA by 25 million people. It is the monument of Hollywood’s most glorious period, the super melodrama that undoubtedly espouses the Southern cause (blacks speak in infinitive verbs like Indians in old westerns) based on the 1936 best-selling novel by Margaret Mitchell, with the heroine desired by all divas, Rossella O’Hara.
Vivien Leigh (an Englishwoman!) won the match after 1400 auditions in which Katharine Hepburn, Bette Davis, Joan Crawford were rejected. Double directions: Victor Fleming who is in the credits is responsible for 50% of the shot, but George Cukor had started before him, then Sam Wood continued, the producer Selznick and William Cameron Menzies who shot the fire in Atlanta, first scene on 10 December ’38, burning old sets like those of King Kong.
The history, 100% southerner-racist, is that of the Civil War, of the cotton plantations of Tara, where the infinite love story is grafted between the stubborn, capricious Rossella O’Hara and the adventurer Rhett Butler (Clark Gable ), joined by his cousin Melania (Olivia de Havilland, who died in 2020 at the age of 104) and first love Ashley (Leslie Howard). Cult joke: frankly I don’t care (in the original for the word Damn, damnation, a fine of 5,000 dollars was paid); her punch line to the audience: Tomorrow is another day.
