Relations between Madrid and Caracas, already strained since the July presidential elections in Venezuela, in which President Maduro was declared the winner but with suspicions of irregularities, are on the verge of rupture. The Venezuelan government recalled its ambassador to Madrid for consultations, after Spain’s defense minister publicly described the Venezuelan government as a “dictatorship.”
