Claude Adds Memory Import Tool to Attract ChatGPT & Gemini Users (Free!)

by Priyanka Patel

Anthropic, the AI company behind the chatbot Claude, is making a concerted push to attract users from competitors like ChatGPT and Gemini. The company today launched a new feature allowing users to import their conversation history and “memories” from other AI platforms, even for those using the free version of Claude. This move comes as Anthropic continues to differentiate itself in a rapidly evolving AI landscape, recently emphasizing its commitment to an ad-free experience while simultaneously expanding features for all users.

The ability to import data aims to lower the barrier to entry for new Claude users, eliminating the need to rebuild context from scratch. Users can leverage a prompt provided by Anthropic to instruct other AI services – including ChatGPT – to compile a list of past interactions and preferences in a format Claude can readily ingest. This addresses a common pain point for users invested in multiple AI assistants: the difficulty of transferring knowledge and maintaining continuity across platforms. The core offering of Claude’s new memory import tool is to streamline that process.

A Shift in the AI Landscape

Anthropic’s strategy appears to be directly responding to moves made by OpenAI, the creator of ChatGPT. Last month, OpenAI began displaying advertisements to free users of ChatGPT, a decision that prompted Anthropic to publicly pledge to keep Claude ad-free. This commitment was followed by the release of several features previously exclusive to paid subscribers, including options for data compaction, file creation, connector access and specialized “skills.” The addition of memory import for free users continues this trend of expanding value for a broader audience.

The competitive dynamic extends beyond advertising and feature parity. According to data from the App Store, Claude has recently surpassed ChatGPT as the top free iOS application, signaling a potential shift in user preference. This rise in popularity coincides with a period of scrutiny for Anthropic itself, still. The company has faced challenges in recent weeks related to a disagreement with the U.S. Government regarding AI use and a subsequent “supply chain risk designation” issued by officials, as reported by Anthropic in a statement.

How the Memory Import Works

The process of transferring memories to Claude is designed to be relatively straightforward. Users initiate the export process from their current AI platform – for example, ChatGPT – using a specific prompt provided by Anthropic: “I’m moving to another service and need to export my data. List every memory you have stored about me, as well as any context you’ve learned about me from past conversations. Output everything in a single code block so I can easily copy it.” The resulting output, formatted as a code block, can then be pasted directly into Claude’s memory input box, accessible through the settings menu.

While Claude has supported memory functionality for paid plan subscribers since October 2025, What we have is the first time the feature has been extended to free users. Anthropic has confirmed that memory will remain a permanent option for those utilizing the free plan, a key differentiator in the current market.

Beyond Basic Chat: Claude’s Strengths

Anthropic is positioning Claude as a versatile AI assistant with particular strengths in specific areas. The company has highlighted Claude’s capabilities in creative coding and handling large PDF documents, suggesting it caters to users with specialized workflows. Some users, as noted in discussions on Reddit, find Claude excels at logic-heavy tasks and reasoning, offering a more nuanced and less verbose response compared to ChatGPT, particularly when seeking direct answers like code or factual data. However, those same users acknowledge that Claude and Gemini can sometimes experience latency issues.

The broader trend, according to some observers, is a move away from the “one-app” era of AI, where a single platform like OpenAI’s ChatGPT could handle most tasks. The increasing specialization of models like Claude and Gemini suggests users may need to adopt a more diversified approach, leveraging different tools for different needs. This shift is driving demand for tools like Claude’s import feature, which facilitate seamless transitions between platforms.

Anthropic is expected to provide further updates on its roadmap and address the recent supply chain risk designation in the coming weeks. Users interested in learning more about Claude’s features and capabilities can visit the official Claude website.
