Climate Activists Disrupt Flight Operations at Frankfurt Airport in Wake of Global Protests

by time news

Due to an action by climate activists, air traffic at Frankfurt Airport was temporarily halted. This was announced by a spokesman for the German federal police. Several demonstrators from the “Last Generation” entered the airport grounds early in the morning and glued themselves down.

“We are doing everything we can to remove the climate activists from the tarmac,” said a spokesman for the federal police on Thursday morning. The “Last Generation” claimed responsibility for the blockade. Six activists had cut openings in a wire fence with small pliers, gaining access that way. On foot, by bicycle, and on skateboards, they reached various locations around the runways. A photo shows an activist who appears to have glued himself down while holding a banner reading “Oil kills.”

At around 07:45, there was an initial, cautious all-clear. Air traffic at Germany’s largest airport was partially resumed. Takeoffs and landings are taking place again, confirmed a spokesman for the airport.

Austria Also Affected

As early as Wednesday, activists worldwide had drawn attention to climate change with protests at airports. Vienna Airport in Schwechat was also affected, where four individuals held a demonstration and spilled paint in the check-in area. In a statement, the group “Last Generation” reiterated its demand from the previous day to “draft and sign a legally binding international agreement that regulates the global exit from oil, gas, and coal by 2030.”

Meanwhile, Frankfurt Airport is calling on passengers via social media not to come to the airport for the time being.
