Human-induced climate change doubled the likelihood of extreme wildfires in Ontario and the Northwest Territories, according to a rapid analysis released by World Weather Attribution. The fires have burned over 3.8 million hectares nationwide, displacing thousands and blanketing millions across North America in dense smoke.
The 2026 wildfire season has intensified rapidly across Canada, shifting from a slow start to a crisis. A new scientific analysis reveals that human-driven global warming has made extreme fire weather in Ontario and the Northwest Territories approximately twice as likely to occur.
Researchers examined the seven-day and 30-day periods of peak fire weather in both regions. Their findings indicate that what was once a rare climatic event is now projected to recur once every six to 15 years in Ontario and every two to six years in the Northwest Territories. In a climate-unaltered baseline scenario, those same conditions would emerge less than once every four decades.
Destruction Across Ontario and the Northwest Territories
To date, more than 3.8 million hectares of land have burned nationwide, forcing the displacement of thousands of residents. In Ontario, the wildfire season has reached its highest ever recorded area burned.

Jonathan Boucher shared those figures during a press briefing hosted by World Weather Attribution, highlighting the sudden, explosive spread of the blazes.
Noah Freedman, vice-president of the union representing the province’s firefighters and who has experience leading fire crews, stated that Ontario’s firefighting system ‘falling apart’ due to years of government mismanagement, leaving crews without adequate resources.
Contrasting Realities in Quebec and British Columbia
While central and western regions battle intense blazes, conditions elsewhere show signs of divergence. In Quebec, fires have experienced a notable lull following weeks of intensive suppression efforts. Stéphane Caron, prevention and communications coordinator for the Société de protection des forêts contre le feu, noted that the four fires declared within the province’s densely populated intensive protection zone have been successfully contained. Crews are now engaged in mop-up operations.
Yet, Quebec’s northern territory above the 51st parallel tells a different story. The region has recorded 287 vegetation fires since the start of the 2026 season—five times the ten-year average of 57. As of Tuesday, 80 uncontained fires burned in the north under close observation, though authorities confirmed they pose no immediate threat to communities or critical infrastructure. Across Quebec, approximately 1,214,633 hectares have burned this season, a sharp contrast to the catastrophic four million hectares scorched by this date during the 2023 season.
British Columbia faces a much graver situation, contending with prolonged drought and aggressive flames. Thousands of residents have evacuated the Okanagan Lake region, where fires now encompass more than 26 square kilometers. Major incidents are also active near Boston Bar in the Fraser Canyon, Kimberley in the East Kootenays, and Clinton in the Thompson-Nicola region, forcing multiple First Nations communities from their homes.
Continental Smoke and Scientific Warnings on Fossil Fuels
The atmospheric consequences of these fires extend far beyond immediate burn perimeters. Smoke from the northern blazes has drifted thousands of kilometers, degrading air quality across southern Ontario, the U.S. Midwest and Northeast, and British Columbia’s metropolitan Vancouver, where authorities issued high-risk advisories urging residents to avoid strenuous outdoor exercise.

Friederike Otto emphasized that the global reliance on fossil fuels is making these wildfires more frequent, more intense and more difficult to contain.
United Nations Climate Change Executive Secretary Simon Stiell echoed those conclusions in a published statement, asserting that humanity’s addiction to coal, oil, and gas is converting Canadian forests into tinderboxes. Mike Flannigan, a professor of wildland fire at Thompson Rivers University who was independent of the study, pointed out that Canada’s 10-year running average for area burned has nearly quadrupled since the early 1970s. Noting that Canada experienced three bad fire seasons in a row from 2023 to 2025—which consumed roughly eight percent of the nation’s forests—Flannigan described 2026 as a litmus test that confirms most future years will bring severe fire conditions as warmer temperatures rapidly dry out ground-level organic fuel.
