Climate change poses a real threat to billions of people around the world.

As reported by Day.Az on Wednesday, this is stated, in particular, in a letter from COP29 President Mukhtar Babayev addressed to COP participants.

“Climate change threatens to undermine decades of progress in global development, with devastating consequences for many, while climate action promises a better future for all. Growing geopolitical tensions and uncertainty in the international environment must not distract us from the imperatives of cooperation and addressing climate change as the greatest transnational challenge of the century. We will spare no effort to act as a bridge between developed and developing countries and lead the process towards consensus at COP29,” the letter says.

It is noted that during the COP29 Presidency consultations, a vision was presented based on two parallel pillars, with climate finance being a top priority. “These pillars reinforce each other, with progress on one sending a strong signal in support of the other. Successfully communicating key mandates and activities will be essential to building trust and solidarity,” the letter says.

Let us recall that in November this year, Azerbaijan will host the 29th session of the Conference of the Parties to the UN Framework Convention on Climate Change (COP29). The decision to do so was made at the COP28 plenary session held in Dubai on December 11 last year. Over the course of two weeks, Baku, becoming the center of the world, will host about 70-80 thousand foreign guests.

The United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change is an agreement signed at the Earth Summit in Rio de Janeiro in June 1992 to prevent dangerous human interference with the climate system. The abbreviation COP stands for Conference of Parties, which is the highest legislative body overseeing the implementation of the Framework Convention on Climate Change.

The convention has 198 parties. Unless the parties decide otherwise, the COP is held annually. The first COP event took place in March 1995 in Berlin, and its secretariat is located in Bonn.
