SURVEY – The players in the sector are rethinking their offer and trying to adapt to the new constraints.

A sector blessed by the gods, really? Renowned for its ability to recover from all crises, world tourism is currently undergoing a series of tests. The most impressive was inflicted by the devastating fires on the Greek islands of Rhodes, Corfu and Euboea.

Causing the death of five people, they devastated 50,000 hectares of forest, decimated wildlife and destroyed dozens of businesses, hotels, homes and vehicles. In Rhodes, 30,000 people were evacuated in an emergency, including many tourists, relocated to conference rooms, schools, gymnasiums or ferries. Tour operators have repatriated thousands of visitors by plane, while eliminating service to the island for a week.

Elsewhere in Greece, tourists exposed to the country’s longest heatwave (more than 14 consecutive days above 40°C) are fleeing historic sites during the hottest hours. The Acropolis finds itself stormed at dawn by hordes of visitors…
