In order to continue safeguarding the security of Salvadorans, the deputies of the Legislative Assembly approved, with 57 votes, the thirtieth extension of the Exceptional Regime, a tool with which the Executive, supported by the Legislative Body, has directly fought gangs in the country.

This tool has allowed El Salvador to reach historic figures without homicides, positioning it as one of the safest countries in the region.

According to data, thanks to this measure, 581 days have been recorded without homicides, and together with the Territorial Control Plan, there have been 694 days without violent deaths since President Nayib Bukele’s administration. In addition, 81,945 gang members have been captured and 4,308 firearms, 9,409 vehicles and 21,044 cell phones seized.

The regime has also resulted in a reduction in the homicide rate to 2.1 per 100,000 inhabitants, even lower than Canada’s (2.24) in 2023.

The President of the Legislative Assembly, Ernesto Castro, recalled that the results of this measure have shown that there has been no other more effective formula to combat gangs than the Exceptional Regime.

“Those who forget the past are condemned to repeat it. We cannot forget where we came from, how this country was left to us, how the President received this country in 2019 and how this State Body, from 2019 to 2021, opposed the work he proposed to do to recover the country,” the legislator recalled.

President Castro emphasized that in El Salvador, thanks to the security issue, there have been important changes and that Salvadorans in the territory are the first to demonstrate this.

“This State Body has provided the governability for the execution of these legal frameworks and everything with the Constitution in hand, demonstrating that we were able to do something that could have been done in the past, but they did not want to recover the territory, save the lives of Salvadorans,” Castro said.
