Climate resilience: IMF to grant Morocco a loan of 1.3 billion dollars (Kristalina Georgieva)

New York – International Monetary Fund (IMF) Managing Director Kristalina Georgieva announced on Monday that the IMF will provide Morocco with a $1.3 billion loan to strengthen its resilience to climate risks.

“The IMF has concluded with Morocco an agreement at the expert level to provide long-term financing of 1.3 billion dollars,” intended to consolidate the resilience of the Kingdom to mitigate the impact of climate change, Ms. Georgieva said in an exclusive interview with MAP.

The IMF Managing Director, who is attending the 78th session of the UN General Assembly in New York, said climate change is one of the major challenges facing the international community.

Among the challenges facing the world today is climate change, which “is already affecting us in a significant way,” she said, stressing that this issue will be one of the three axes on which the IMF intends to focus during its participation in the summit on the Sustainable Development Goals, which is being held on the sidelines of the high-level debate of the UN General Assembly.

Ms Georgieva further cited debt “which has increased dramatically and is a burden on low-income countries.”

She also highlighted the importance of digital inclusion in fostering growth and prosperity around the world, stressing the importance of cooperation and partnership as ways to overcome current challenges.

“We will also focus on ways to enable international institutions to work together more effectively,” Georgieva said.
