Climate scientists have called for continued intensification of efforts in research into climate change due to concern about the significant increase in ocean temperatures and its devastating effects on the climate.
Executive Secretary of the Intergovernmental Oceanographic Commission of UNESCO, Vidar Helgesen, explained that “the changes are occurring so rapidly that scientists are unable to monitor their impact,” stressing during the “Decade of the Oceans” conference held in the Spanish city of Barcelona, “It is necessary to make an effort “Much greater in terms of monitoring and research,” considering that “addressing ocean warming is an urgent issue.”
The temperature of the oceans, which cover 70 percent of the planet’s area and play a major role in regulating the global climate, recorded a new record last March, as it averaged 21.7 degrees Celsius measured on the surface of the water, excluding areas near the poles.
The increase in temperature every month since the year threatens marine life, while leading to an increase in humidity in the atmosphere, which causes more climate fluctuations, such as violent winds and heavy rains.
